Women and child
development minister Krishna Tirath informed the Lok Sabha that, Tamil Nadu
recorded the highest number of domestic violence cases in the country with
3,983 cases last year. This amounts to more than one-third of the total number
of cases recorded in India
in 2011, she said citing the latest National Crime Records Bureau data.
Overall, the country recorded 9,431 cases of domestic violence against women.
Gujarat comes a close
second with 3,266 cases while West Bengal
ranks third with 1,661 cases of domestic violence against women. Tamil Nadu's
crime records bureau listed a 15.4% increase in cruelty against women by
husband and other relatives with over 1,812 cases recorded last year under this
category.
In 2010, 11,718 cases were registered
under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act while in 2009, 7,803,
cases were registered. In reply to another question, the minister said the
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had dealt with 36
complaints against alleged suicides of students in school or colleges. Of
these, the maximum 21 complaints were in Tamil Nadu followed by four from
Andhra Pradesh.
Officials and
activists are divided over the reasons for such high figures. They said that,
Tamil Nadu has better awareness about the laws and hence the rate is high.
