Countries in "red planet" project

Russia
The space-race to Mars was kicked off by the Soviet Union in Oct 1960, but it was a series of failed missions. Their first success was in 1971, three missions launched when Earth and Mars were unusually close, minimizing fuel needed. After that its flights have only partially succeeded
USA
Launched in 1964.  NASA’s aircraft in July 1965 snapped a monochrome photo, humankind’s first close-up view of another planet. The Mars Global Surveyor (1966) lasted four times longer than planned. The Mars Odyssey (1996) has been in Mars orbit since October 2001 – the longest-serving Mars craft in history. The 1996 Mars Pathfinder bounced onto Mars’ surface on July 04, 1997 to release the tiny Sojourner vehicle, the first rover on Mars. Rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars in Jan 2004. Japan
In July 1988 launched the Nozomi that had a chemical malfunction which put it on the wrong trajectory
Europe
Launched in June 2003 the European Space Agency’s craft Mars Express and Beagle 2 started orbiting Mars December 2003. Before entering orbit Mars Express released a UK lander, the Beagle 2, which entered the Martian atmosphere but was never heard again
China
In Nov 2011, the small Mars orbiter Yinghuo 1 hitched a ride on Russia’s Phobos-Grunt mission to become the first Chinese spacecraft to reach and orbit Mars. But it fell back to Earth in an uncontrolled re-entry in Jan 2012
