Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa
announced gift hampers to all ‘rice card-holders’ (family card holders who are
getting rice through Public Distribution System) in the State on the occasion
of Pongal festival. The measure would cost an additional expenditure of Rs. 281
crore to the State exchequer. Each gift hamper will comprise of one kilogram of
raw rice worth Rs. 20, one kilogram of sugar worth Rs. 40 and Rs. 100 in cash.
The gift hampers would be
distributed to the family card-holders ahead of Pongal festival, the Chief
Minister said in a statement. A decision
to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by her and held at her
Kodanadu camp office.
Recalling the significance of
Pongal festival and glory of farmers, Jayalalithaa said the harvest festival
has been celebrated with fervour. Provision of gift hampers would enable all
sections of the society celebrate this happy occasion.
The Chief Minister also
recalled that considering the drought condition that prevailed during the last
year and the crop loss to the farmers, the government headed by her had
provided pongal gift hampers to 1.84 crore family card holders.
