Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa
announced that the State government would present a new award in the name of
poet Ilango Adigal who authored Tamil epic Silappathikaram, from this year. The award will be presented every year to a
person who pens literary works on the lines of Ilango Adigal or those who
spread the glory of Silappathikaram.
The award will be presented
on Tamil New Year Day, the first day of the month of Chithirai. The award carries Rs. 1 lakh in cash, a gold
medal and a citation, the Chief Minister said while making a suo motu statement
in the Assembly under Rule 110.
The Chief Minister also said
another award by name Tamil Chemmal, would be instituted to honour those who
work for the growth of Tamil language. The award will be given to one person in
each of the 32 districts. It carries Rs. 25,000 in cash, and a citation.
During the past three years, the
government headed by her had instituted awards in the names of legendary poets
Kambar and Kabilar, UV Swaminatha Iyer, Umaru Pulavar and GU Pope. Apart from these, Sollin Selvar award, Computer
Tamil award and Thamizh Thaai award had also been instituted.
The Chief Minister also
announced that two new buildings would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 15 crore
on the Tamil University campus in Thanjavur for the
benefit of the students, while a gallery on the virtues practised by ancient
Tamils would be established at International Institute of Tamil Studies in
Taramani at an expenditure of Rs. 2.50 crore.
