Disaster of 2011
Sikkim earthquake: The disastrous earthquake in Sikkim dated on Sep 18, 2011. It killed 116 people and left many injured in Nepal too. The quake came just 11 days after Delhi witnessed mild tremor shakes. Prime Minister visited the State.
Turkey Earthquake: Around 604 people were killed and approx 4000 injured in the Turkey (Oct 23, 2011). At least 11000 buildings destroyed. Another earthquake jolted Turkey on Nov 09, 2011 in which 40 people dead.
Rail mishap: At least 70 people dead and more than 300 were injured after Delhi-bound Kalka mail derailed near Malwa Station in UP (July 10, 2011). The accident was worst this year and the second in three days to have taken place in UP after the Mathura-Chhapra Express rammed a bus in Kamshiram Nagar, which killed 38 bus passengers. It clearly exposed Indian railways' poor standards of safety and maintenance.
Eruption o f Nabro: The 2011 Nabro eruption was an eruption of the Nabro stratovolcano in the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea (June 12, 2011). The eruption killed seven people. The eruption also made 31 people to have the highest level of suphur dioxide ever observed from Earth's orbit.The eruption also disrupted the air traffic. Until the eruption began, the volcano was thought to be extinct.
Japan Quake: On March 11, 2011, Japan was jolted by an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the richter scale -making it one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history. The earthquake triggered off powerful tsunami waves that reached heights og up to 40.5 metres (133 feet).Nearly 16000 people dead in this devasted quake. The earthquake was followed by 1235 aftershocks that continued to put life in peril in Japan. Fukushima nuclear plant's radiation leak created panic.This panic only now gripped the protests in Kudankulam Nuclear power plant in India.
Zanzibar ferry sinking: At least 240 people dead when a ferry sank off the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar/ An additional 607 people who were on the vessel were rescued. The boat sank around midnight while en route to Pemba Island from Zanzibar.
