A day after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa warned of
stringent action against those who instigated innocent people on caste lines, the
State police cracked the whip on Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Vanniyar
Sangam. PMK leaders S. Ramdoss, G.K. Mani and hundreds of others were arrested
across the northern districts on various charges.
Even as prohibitory orders
were clamped in Villupuram district under the provisions of Section 144 of Cr.PC,
Dr. Ramadoss led about 400 cadres to stage a demonstration near the Villupuram
railway station. A strong police posse intercepted the protesters and took them
into custody. They were remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
A special team of the
Kancheepuram police arrested PMK floor leader Kaduvetti J. Guru from the MLAs’
hostel (Chennai) in connection with an old case for which a warrant was pending.
The case pertains to Mr. Guru making an inflammatory speech in Thalambur.
As the arrests were being
made, suspected PMK sympathisers damaged 25 buses, mostly state-owned. At
Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district, a mob forced out passengers and set a bus
on fire. In Villupuram and adjoining areas, stones were thrown at a dozen buses
damaging window panes.
Violent incidents targeting a
particular community were reported near Marakkanam in Kancheepuram district
during the ‘Chitra Pournami’ festival. The incidents drew sharp criticism in
the State Assembly and Ms. Jayalalithaa held the PMK and Vanniyar Sangam
responsible for the attack.
