2 years of Jayalalithaa Government

Tamil Nadu gave a clear mandate to Jayalalithaa in the 2011 elections. But whether she fulfilled the wishes of people is a big question? Though one year of rule is not a correct method to judge the rule, here are some important areas I am discussing about the Jaya’s one year rule…

(1) Law and Order:
In general, AIADMK means it will be fruitful for the common people in the law and order, but this time AIADMK is not much too the mark in the law and order. (However it is far better than the previous DMK & Co backed by Congress). The often transfers of bureaucrats is the most important reason for this.

(2) Electricity Crisis:
The AIADMK totally goes WORST in this sector. The previous DMK itself better. After two years of rule, neither new electricity projects nor any changes in the existing policy came up in the State. Only speeches in meetings and Assemblies says that TN will be power surplus. Every fortnight, Jaya assures that Tamil Nadu will be free from the power crisis. But the people are losing the faith. Often changing the Electricity Department secretary proves that Jaya is totally not serious on this issue

(3) Fare hike of transport, milk, and electricity bill:
The fare hike of bus, milk and electricity bill after a gap of ten years will not go easy for the people (whatever reasons CM says). {In rural areas, they are saying that DMK is far better; though they are totally corrupt they not raised any hike to the public}. Even the educated, uneducated, rural and urban people are fed up with this. Even now the public are daily murmuring in buses while they buy tickets. (In Chennai it is confusing to travel in buses, many types viz, white board, yellow boards, green board, cricket special, summer special, deluxe, super deluxe, etc…)

(4) Kudankulam Crisis:
I really wonder what made Jaya first to halt the operation and then nod the project? (Though by-election maybe the reason, it is not the Jaya’s style) She not even came publicly to address about the crisis is a big drawback. (It is not wrong for Jaya to have national significance alone, but she should come to the media often. It is really wondering why she still stay away from the media) But handling the protestors without any violence was a good thing.

(5) Meeting the public /press:
Jaya is probably the only CM who will never address the media. After winning the 2011 election, she said to press that, she will meet press once in a week but in the past one year, she met only twice. Remaining small interviews are done while she passes in car (That too about Chidambaram or DMK alone) She lastly met press on when Centre government notified Cauvery tribunal award (Feb 2013)

(6) Fighting for State rights:
The only area where Jaya excelled. She fought a legal battle on Cauvery water issue with Centre government and Karnataka government. Now state is eagerly waiting for the Mullaperiyar dam issue. Both could have been easily solved by DMK in previous regime itself with the full support of Congress but Karunanidhi totally failed in this. Her letter to PM on the various issues arise hot debate in the national level

 (7) On Sri Lankan Tamil issue:
Once she was a hard hater in this issue. But now she has all the rights. Ban Sri Lanka in Asian Athletics Meet or shift it from Chennai (who else can say like this); Stop Lankan players from IPL in Chennai; Retrieve Katchatheev island resolution in TN Assembly; Stop saying Sri Lanka as a friendly nation resolution in TN Assembly, etc… When student protest is on peak against Sri Lankan war crimes, she not suppressed (as much as DMK done in 2006-2011). She cunningly closed all the colleges which made students to protest for a month (including engineering colleges and IIT-Madras). These protests made a total anger against DMK and Congress in Tamil Nadu that eventually made DMK to come out from UPA at the Centre.

(8) No proper arguments/debates in Assembly:
In the Assembly, daily under Rule 110, Jaya announces various measures. But whether it got implemented or not is a big question. She never allows any arguable debates in the Assembly is a bad example. (Suspending DMDK MLAs for one year is not much fair- it should be reduced to 3 months or even lesser). All Ministers and ruling MLAs when started to speak, they fully praise on Jaya (in their 15 mts speech, nearly 8 mts goes for praise on Jaya alone)
2/10
(9) Frequent transfers of IAS/IPS:
Jaya is probably the only CM who can transfer the IAS and IPS officers on daily basis. This will not give the best governance. She can transfer nor dismiss her Cabinet Ministers – nothing harm in that. But the frequent transfer of IAS and IPS officers is a direct threat to law and order problem and also a hurdle to the development of State.

(10) More on education reforms:
Another reason where one can smile is on the reforms made by her on education sector especially on primary school education. Government school teachers are given more work (sure they are not going to vote for her in the next elections). Though I hate freebies, but as far in this sector I welcome it. Some of the things which are given free to school students are: chappals, uniform sets, bags, geometry boxes, colour pencils, maps, books, notes, scholarship to students for complete studying in the schools, etc… In the latest budget, approx Rs. 16000 cr earmarked for Primary School alone is a noteworthy and praiseworthy.

Some of the things where really Jaya done OK
Ø     Primary School education department
Ø     Ministers under control
Ø     Fighting for the State rights (Mullaperiyar, Cauvery, etc)
Ø     Sri Lankan Tamil issue
Ø     Hosting of FIDE (World Chess Championship) in Chennai
Ø     Vishwaroopam’ issue
Where she totally failed:-
Ø     Increasing crime rate (t s totally different from law and order)
Ø     Price rise unable to control
Ø     ‘Powerless’ TN
Ø     Sand mafia
Ø     Once again TNPSC moved to “commission” (after the retirement of Mr. Nataraj)
Ø     Vishwaroopam’ issue
Ø     What happened to the Madurai granite scam case? Is the case is alive or not?

Future lies ahead or not:-
I think the future of Jaya and her party lies “cat on the wall”.
·        Until she resolves electricity problem, there will be a worst disaster for her party in the forthcoming elections.
·        She should think of alliance much stronger in the forthcoming general elections
·        Keeping the BJP and Congress at an equidistant is a brilliant idea but later (if her party wins) she MUST go with either of these parties only
·        Must put efficient officers to handle law and order issue. On the recent Bangalore bomb blast, culprits are from TN, Bangalore police came and arrested them – shame to the police of TN; recent PMK leaders hate speech and Police failed to act wisely or boldly on this issue.
·        IAS officers like Mr. Sagayam can be made into TNPSC Chairman or Electricity Department Secretary; so that he can do something – that eventually get a good name to the government

{It’s all totally my personal view;}
