Website to raise funds for convict on death row

The People’s Movement Against Death Penalty, a movement headed by former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer, launched a website to raise support and sympathy, as well as funds, for the ongoing legal battle to save A.G. Perarivalan, convict on death row in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The website contains details of the sensational case, current status, news articles and a payment gateway for purchasing e-books authored by the convict who is lodged in Vellore Central Prison. The website -- www.perarivalan.com -- is bilingual, and describes Perarivalan as ‘a victim of denied justice'.

E-book store, photo/video gallery and an interactive corner, the website is linked to social network sites like Facebook and Twitter to enable users comment or follow the updates. According to the Chennai Chapter of PMADP, the movement is chaired by social activists and retired judges. Though it opposes the death penalty as a whole and does not go into every case, it has partnered with Arputham Ammal, mother of Perarivalan, in the mission to bring out the truth and render justice.
"This website is a mission to accumulate details of the case in one location, share important information and raise funds for the convicts, (including the two others sentenced to death in the case, Murugan alias Sriharan and Suthanthiraja alias Santhan) facing the gallows for more than 22 years," says its convenor Selvaraj Murugaiyyan.
