PM Press Meet -- AN Overview...

PM Press Meet – an overview

At last Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh opened his mouth by speaking to the selected TV editors in New Delhi on February 16, 2011. The interaction was for about 70 minutes. The Parliament is going to meet on February 27, 2011 for budget session. The opposition parties stalled the entire session of Parliament in the demand of JPC to probe the 2G spectrum scam. This press meet was seen as most important in the entire nation, as the govt (UPA – II) is facing the series of scams viz., CWG, Adarsh, 2G and the latest being ISRO-Devas link. In general, most of the quests are in surround of 2G Spectrum scam and ISRO only…

Some of the important answers given y PM is here given in a nutshell:

²  I have never said that have never committed a mistake but I am not as big culprit as is being made out.
²  My compulsion is that I have to bear a lot because we cannot have elections in every six moths. Some compromises have to be made in managing a coalition.
²  The irregularities during his tenure as his biggest regret.
²  He denied that he ever considered quitting over scams, asserting that he would complete his tenure.
²  Refused to directly say if he agreed with telecom Minister Kapil Sibal’s “zero loss” claim in 2G allocations.
²  Not afraid of facing a parliamentary probe.
²  I don’t know what was the motivation of the people who got the spectrum. I thought it was the prevailing practice and Raja was continuing with policy.
²  Government better prepared to deal with terror acts.
²  Centre trying to evolve consensus on Telangana.
²  Spectrum bid of First-Come-First-Service (FCFS) was never discussed with me nor was brought to the cabinet. This was exclusively the Telecom Minister’s (A Raja) decision.
²  2G loss is equivalent to loss of subsidies given for food, kerosene etc.,

  • Subsidies on food, kerosene etc., are meant for the welfare of the poor. But the beneficiaries of scams like 2G are those who have a huge amount of money in their bank accounts.
  • In a country where majority of the people lives below the poverty line, subsidies are a must. How can these be compared with the spectrum sale, which benefited people who are already rich?
  • 2G loss is equivalent to loss of subsidies given for food, kerosene etc.,, may be Pm thinks the poorest an the business czars eat pretty similar food. Well done, PM!!
  • It was shocking to hear Dr. Singh blame his inaction on coalition compulsions. It was more or less an admission of charge that the UPA government does not mind compromising with its coalition partners to stay in power.
  • While coalition politics has its limitations, it cannot be used as a shield to protect the wrongdoings of a government. In the 2G issue, alarm was raised much before the license was issued. But Dr. Singh chose to ignore it. Same was the case with the S-band.
  • PM has claimed that he was unable to interfere with the re-induction of A Raja. Does he propose to keep quiet for another 3½ years even if he is not satisfied with his allies?
  • PM’s assertion that he was ‘dead serious’ about bringing to book all wrongdoers lacked sincerity as he himself confessed that one has to tolerate a great deal while dealing with a coalition. His statement is an indirect admission that corruption is an unavoidable by-product of coalition politics.
The media interaction may prove Dr Singh is not corrupt. But his colleagues, his government… is it enough that a leader alone is not corrupt? At the same time, his speech not promised anything about the corruption. As the 2G scam is being directly investigated by CBI (under the guidance of Supreme Court only; kudos to Justice Ganguly and Shingvi this case is being still talked now. If it is not being monitored by Supreme Court means, the case have been closed as earlier as possible.
A new word is being added to Indian Constitution by the politicians (not leaders) without any amendments.. viz., it is “coalition dharma”
But PM speech made it clear that People have to tolerate anything or any type of corruption whatever the amount may be if coalition government occurs. What to do? Our electoral system is so weak and also the people of India are divided on the basis of religion, region, caste, etc.,,,
