The Winners
THE WINNERS: Tarun Gogoi, Jayalalithaa, Oommen Chandy and N. Rangasamy were sworn-in as the chief ministers of Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry respectively.

MAYA’S FORMULA: As Uttar Pradesh is headed for Assembly polls in 2012, state Chief Minister Mayawati proposed to divide the most populous state into 4 - Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh, Paschim Pradesh. The Centre, however, returned the resolution seeking clarification but the demand remains.
CVC appointment
LIKE CAESAR’S WIFE: The Supreme Court quashed the appointment of P.J. Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), as he is in the accused list in the Kerala palmolein scam case. Laying guidelines on the appointment of CVC, the Supreme Court also rules that eligible persons for the post should be without any blemish.
Red Encounter
RED ENCOUNTER: Communist Party of India (Maoist) Polit Bureau member Koteshwara Rao alias Kishenji, who has been spearheading Maoist operations in West Bengal's Jangalmahal region, was killed in a suspected encounter in the Burisole forest area in Paschim Medinipur district.

MINING TROUBLES: Once the BJP’s blue-eyed boy, B.S. Yeddyurappa was asked to resign his Chief Ministership by the party’s high command. The leader who survived opposition attacks, party in-fighting and Governor’s pressure succumbed to mining irregularities.
Chopper disaster
ARUNACHAL TRAGEDY: The government owned chopper that was carrying Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and four others went missing. After five days of intensive search, the remains of the chopper, bodies of Arunachal chief minister and others were recovered near the India-China border.
Telangana
JAI TELANGANA: The demand to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to create a separate Telangana grew stronger this year. The students of Osmania University, Telangana Joint Action Force and Telangana politicians across parties joined the Jai Telangana chorus. A united-Andhra slogan too figured to counter the Telangana agitation.
Terrorism once gain
DARKNESS AT NOON: Terror reared its ugly head again. This time it was at the Delhi High Court, where a high intensity briefcase bomb went off in the crowded reception area killing 11 people and injuring over 75.
Terror in Mumbai once again
MUMBAI TERROR AGAIN: Three coordinated bombings tore through the heart of Mumbai at Dadar, Zaveri Bazaar and Opera House, on July 13, 2011, killing dozens of people in the worst terror attack in the country since the 2008 Mumbai siege.
War over Water
TWO STATES AND A DAM: What could have been a symbol of harmony and co-existence, is now the epicentre of more than a century-old dispute. The debate on the safety of Mullaperiyar dam even took some violent turns this year. Will 2012 provide a solution to the dispute?
