Tragic Bengal
SERIES OF SORROWS: Spate of infant deaths allegedly due to inadequate medical attention, a fire accident in AMRI hospital and over a hundred dead after consuming spurious liquor… West Bengal witnessed three major tragedies this year.
Murder
MURDER MYSTERY: Mid-Day's crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was killed in broad daylight in Mumbai allegedly for writing about Mumbai mafia. Police arrested Jigna Vora, an Asian Age journalist, in connection with the murder. The trial is expected to begin in 2012.
Condition of Manipur
MANIPUR BLOCKADE: People waiting in long queues for petrol in Imphal. The four month economic blockade only added woes to this north-eastern state, which is already bearing the brunt of ethnic conflicts between the Meiteis, Kukis and Nagas.
Against FDI
CORPORATE VS KIRANA: UPA government’s ambitious plan to open the door for foreign players in retailing was put off this year owing to nationwide protests saying FDI in retail would affect indigenous small traders and retailers.
Workers protest
UP IN ARMS: India’s one of the oldest car manufacturing companies, Maruti Suzuki, experienced labour dispute in its Manesar plant. Repeated strikes badly affected the company's balance sheets. Among other demands, labourers wanted the management to recognise their union. The issue was resolved through a tripartite agreement between the management, workers and the Haryana Government.
Heir for Tata
HEIR APPARENT: Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata discovered his successor in Cyrus Mistry. Mistry will take over from the leading industrialist when he retires in December 2012.
Namma Metro
NAMMA METRO: Bangalore became the third city after Kolkata and Delhi, to have mass rapid transit system. Namma Metro reduces the travel time between M.G. Road and Byappanahalli to just 13 minutes.
Dreamliner in India
DREAM ARRIVAL: Delhi's T3 terminal of the Indira Gandhi International airport welcomed Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
India - world champions
AFTER 28 YEARS: Indian cricket team won the World Cup defeating Sri Lanka at The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
